Part of PR measurement for people who want the details
Measurement design should follow the goal: PR examples across nine use cases
PR measurement examples show nine distinct designs for launches, reputation, issues, events, executive visibility, policy, recruitment, and crisis learning.
What to take away
- Choose a design for the decision rather than copying a fashionable metric.
- Each example needs a baseline, audience, method, and transfer limit.
- Use several forms of evidence when the claim reaches beyond output.
Measurement design should follow the goal: PR examples across nine use cases. PR measurement examples are valuable when they reveal the logic and limits behind the numbers. The nine named programs below are starting points, not ready-made scorecards. Adapt each one to the audience, risk, available data, and management decision.

Nine PR measurement examples
| Communication job | Named example and public fact | Primary question | Evidence mix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Product launch | Old Spice 'The Man Your Man Could Smell Like' (2010): Procter & Gamble and Wieden+Kennedy answered fan questions with more than 180 short videos in 48 hours. | Did priority buyers understand the difference? | Message coding, recall, qualified inquiry |
| Reputation program | Dove 'Real Beauty' (2004): Unilever's study of 3,200 women in 10 countries found only 2% considered themselves beautiful. | Did a defined belief change? | Stable stakeholder survey and interviews |
| Issues campaign | Patagonia 'Don't Buy This Jacket' (2011): A full-page New York Times ad on Black Friday promoted the Common Threads Initiative with eBay resale. | Did the issue enter useful discussion? | Topic analysis, stakeholder response, policy action |
| Executive visibility | Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella's 2023 shareholder letter tied AI plans to Microsoft's $211.9 billion fiscal 2023 revenue. | Did relevant audiences engage with the expertise? | Audience quality, message use, invitations |
| Event | REI #OptOutside (2015): REI closed 143 stores on Black Friday and paid 12,000 employees to spend the day outside. | Did attendance produce a next action? | Registration source, participation, follow-up |
| Recruitment PR | U.S. Army 'Be All You Can Be' (2023): The Army launched its first major rebrand in 20 years in March 2023 after missing its fiscal 2022 recruiting goal by about 15,000 soldiers. | Did qualified candidates act? | Referral tags, applicant quality, interviews |
| Community relations | Amazon HQ2 in Long Island City (2018-2019): Amazon picked the site in November 2018, met community opposition, and canceled the plan in February 2019. | Did concerns reach decisions? | Participation, themes, commitments, closure |
| Crisis response | Johnson & Johnson Tylenol (1982): After seven deaths, J&J recalled 31 million bottles and introduced tamper-resistant packaging. | Did people receive and follow protective information? | Reach test, comprehension, behavior, errors |
| Media program | ProPublica 'Machine Bias' (2016): The investigation found COMPAS risk scores flagged black defendants higher and prompted local reforms. | Did coverage improve audience knowledge? | Content analysis plus audience research |
AMEC's collection of expert measurement perspectives connects media and social indicators to organizational outcomes. It draws on data held across departments and uses evidence to explain what worked and what should change. Those examples are professional perspectives, so teams still need a method suited to their facts.

Turn a pattern into a controlled test
For each design, write intended audience change, starting condition, and expected timing. Then add competing influences, collection method, and decision threshold. A launch may require daily message checks and a later buyer survey.
A reputation program may require a stable quarterly sample. That works best when brand reputation management benchmarks define audience, period, and denominator before collection. Crisis work may need immediate comprehension and action checks.
The CDC's 2024 program evaluation framework organizes evaluation around context, program description, and focused questions. It also covers credible evidence, supported conclusions, and action on findings. It was developed for public-health evaluation, but that sequence can help a business keep a PR example tied to a real program and decision.
Keep the example honest
- Do not call placement an outcome
- Do not add incompatible reach estimates
- Do not infer attitude from positive wording in coverage
- Do not present a tagged visit as a sale caused by PR
- Do not hide an adverse audience segment
- Do not copy a benchmark without matching its definition
A useful example ends with a decision. If priority buyers did not understand the product difference, change the evidence and spokesperson plan. If event attendees did not take a next step, repair the follow-up. If crisis instructions were missed by one group, fix access before celebrating total reach.
Turn examples into test cases
The NIST Privacy Framework starting guide outlines a voluntary process for identifying and managing privacy risk. Use it to assign data and response owners for PR measurement examples; it is not legal clearance.
The W3C information and relationships explanation says visual structure and relationships should also be programmatically available. Apply that check to PR measurement examples outputs, then test the actual page with the users and technology in scope.
For PR measurement examples, keep the evidence record beside the decision so a reviewer can reproduce the reasoning without relying on memory.
Common questions
Which example fits a small business?
Start with one material audience action that can be observed, such as a qualified inquiry, event follow-up, application, or corrected misconception.
Can several examples be combined?
Yes, if each measure keeps its own definition and role in the result chain and the report does not blend outputs with outcomes.
How should an example be documented?
Keep the objective, audience, baseline, method, and data source. Then add the quality check, result, limit, action, and review date.
